Exhaust Truck Accessories

Learn about choosing the best exhaust truck accessory for your pickup

Performance is always high on the list of modifications that most people want. The stock exhaust never has that growl your looking for when revving up at the stoplight. But as with all other aftermarket products, there are so many applications its hard to decide on the right one. You don’t know what it will sound like on your vehicle, is it a direct install or do you have to modify your stock pipes. These are all questions that can be answered with some research. The Internet is a wonder source of information. There are forum sites for just about everything you can drive. Do some generic searches for you vehicle. Check out the forums you find for informed content. Then become a member and start asking questions. But be prepared, you will end up getting hooked.

Talk to other people that have your same type of vehicle to see what exhaust they are running. How do they like the sound? Did they gain performance? Did they lose much torque? With most exhaust systems you will lose some of your torque because a decrease in backpressure decreases your torque output. Most of the time this is offset by the addition of horsepower. You want to pick the exhaust that has the least amount of torque loss.

Next choice is type of material. The least expensive is the steel tubes and steel body exhaust. These will last for about 10 years. Over time they will rust and end up with holes in the muffler or exhaust pipes. Some are treated to last longer but if your looking for a lifetime exhaust you need to go to stainless steel. Stainless will not rust. So it will probably outlast the vehicle. But the cost is normally twice as much. That is a big consideration when replacing you exhaust. Do you plan on keeping the vehicle long enough that you might have to replace the exhaust again? If you do keep it that long then you should spend the extra money and get stainless.

Do you're research on the forums and decide on how long you expect to keep the vehicle before you buy. Once it’s installed it’s yours. Make sure you will be happy with your decision. If you can find someone online that lives close to you ask if you can meet up with him or her to hear his or her exhaust. If you like the sound and you are happy with the life expectancy then you can make an informed decision.
